GANDHINAGAR, OCT 15
From a traditional herding staff to a laptop, and now to 221 JCB machines aimed at creating livelihood opportunities, Gujarat’s Bharwad community is seeking to turn its aspirations into economic mobility. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi has urged the community to pair this push for self-reliance with a stronger commitment to girls’ education, sporting participation and the advancement of its younger generation.
Addressing a community gathering in Gandhinagar on Wednesday, Sanghavi called for a conducive atmosphere in which Bharwad girls could pursue higher education. He also encouraged young people, particularly girls, to participate in sports and games to help fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.
Praising Bharwad Yuva Sangathan’s initiative to provide free laptops to meritorious students, Sanghavi described the journey from “lathi to laptop” as a symbol of progress. The message was clear: economic empowerment must go hand in hand with education, technology and opportunities for the next generation.
221 JCBs: From community solidarity to self-employment
The distribution of 221 JCB machines by Bharwad Yuva Sangathan, Gujarat, marks a community-led effort to expand livelihood opportunities and encourage financial independence among young beneficiaries, including economically weaker and unemployed youth.
The initiative seeks to enable recipients to explore income-generating opportunities in excavation, construction, infrastructure-related work and other sectors that use earthmoving equipment. Its long-term impact will depend on beneficiaries’ ability to secure contracts, manage operating expenses and sustain demand for their services.
The programme was attended by community leaders and dignitaries, with Sanghavi inaugurating the initiative and commending the organisation’s efforts towards socio-economic advancement.
In his address, Deputy Chief Minister said: “From the traditional staff to modern laptops, the inspiring journey of the Bharwad community stands as a testament to its progressive spirit and enduring resolve. The distribution of 221 JCBs will unlock vital avenues for self-employment and economic self-reliance, while access to quality education and technology will empower our coming generations. I commend the Bharwad Yuva Sangathan for spearheading such impactful initiatives toward the community’s holistic advancement.”
‘Lathi to laptop’: Education must lead the transformation
Sanghavi’s emphasis on girls’ education brought a crucial social dimension to the employment initiative. Access to higher education, he stressed, needs an enabling environment within the community, while participation in sports can help young people develop confidence, discipline and wider aspirations.
The recognition of the laptop-distribution programme also underlined the growing importance of digital access in education. For meritorious students, access to technology can support learning, research and preparation for competitive examinations, provided it is backed by appropriate guidance and educational opportunities.
The challenge now is to translate these aspirations into sustained participation in higher education, sports and skill development.
Sangathan’s network of 2.48 lakh youth volunteers
Dilipbhai Bhavanbhai Bharwad, president of Bharwad Yuva Sangathan, Gujarat, thanked Deputy Chief Minister for attending the programme and acknowledged the collective efforts of the organisation in supporting the community’s socio-economic progress.
“At Bharwad Yuva Sangathan, we believe that true community development begins with creating opportunities for people to become self-reliant. The distribution of 221 JCB machines is an important milestone in our efforts to support economically weaker and unemployed youth by helping them pursue livelihood opportunities with dignity and confidence. Our objective is to ensure that young people are equipped to build a better future for themselves and their families. We remain committed to expanding such initiatives and contributing to the overall development of our community,” he said.
Amitbhai Bharwad, general secretary of the organisation, outlined its growth since its establishment in 2017, its volunteer network and its social-development initiatives across Gujarat.
“Since its establishment in 2017, Bharwad Yuva Sangathan has worked to connect young people with opportunities in employment, education and social development. Today, our network comprises 2,48,789 youth volunteers, with committees actively working across Gujarat’s districts, talukas and cities. Through employment-oriented initiatives, free coaching for competitive examinations, awareness about government schemes and community service during natural disasters, we aim to create meaningful and lasting change,” he said.
Beyond machinery: A wider social-development agenda
The JCB distribution programme forms part of a broader range of initiatives undertaken by the organisation in education, employment awareness, skill development and social welfare.
These include free coaching classes for competitive examinations, awareness campaigns on government welfare schemes, efforts to address social evils and volunteer-led relief operations during natural disasters.
The organisation aims to strengthen access to opportunities while encouraging young people to take an active role in community development. The machinery initiative offers one route towards self-employment, while education and technology are intended to widen the community’s longer-term prospects.
The programme was attended by former MLAs Bhavanbhai Jivanbhai Bharwad and Lakhabhai Bharwad; social leader Rajabhai Vamabhai Bharwad; Bharatbhai Sajanbhai Budheliya, Leader of the Opposition in the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation; Ranchhodbhai Gokalbhai Bhadiyadra; Lakshmanbhai Vihabhai Mer; Bhavanbhai Rukhadbhai Bharwad; Bharatbhai Haribhai Mer; Vinubhai Becharbhai Gamara; Bababhai Sabhad; Merubhai Haribhai Bharwad; Manubhai Magunda; Damanbhai Thakor of Amin JCB; and Vidisaben Asarpota of Amin JCB, along with other community representatives and social leaders.
Mehulbhai Bharwad proposed the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the Deputy Chief Minister, beneficiaries, community leaders and others who contributed to organising the programme.
The initiative’s larger test will be whether the machines translate into durable incomes and whether the community’s parallel emphasis on education, sports and technology helps young people access opportunities beyond traditional occupations. Together, these efforts point towards an approach to community development that seeks to combine livelihood creation with wider social advancement.
