Hair-raising truths: Six monsoon myths that could be sabotaging your hair health

Humidity may be unavoidable, but hair damage doesn't have to be. Beauty experts say understanding the science behind monsoon hair care—not myths—is the first step towards stronger roots, healthier scalps and naturally beautiful hair throughout the rainy season: Shailesh Moolya, National Technical Head, Godrej Professional-NE photo.

The arrival of the monsoon brings welcome relief from scorching summer temperatures—but for millions, it also signals the beginning of a familiar battle with hair fall, frizz, greasy scalps and unruly locks.

  • Humidity—not rain—is often the real culprit behind seasonal hair woes, experts reveal
  • Smarter scalp care, not excessive products or heavy oiling, is the secret to healthy monsoon hair
  • Understanding your hair type and adapting your routine can prevent frizz, breakage and unnecessary hair fall
  • Godrej Professional’s National Technical Head Shailesh Moolya busts common misconceptions and offers a science-backed roadmap for stronger, healthier tresses

While many people blame the rain, beauty experts say the real culprit is often misinformation rather than the monsoon itself.

According to Shailesh Moolya, National Technical Head, Godrej Professional, seasonal hair problems are frequently aggravated by outdated beauty myths and inappropriate hair-care routines rather than the weather alone.

“Monsoon hair concerns are often less about the weather itself and more about the way people respond to it. Monsoon demands smarter care, not more complicated rituals,” Moolya explains.

Understanding how humidity affects the scalp and hair can make the difference between struggling with seasonal damage and maintaining healthy, manageable tresses throughout the rainy season.

Myth 1: Rainwater Causes Hair Fall

Perhaps the most widespread misconception is that getting drenched in the rain directly leads to hair loss.

The reality is far less dramatic.

Experts say monsoon hair fall is generally associated with changes in humidity, scalp imbalance and product buildup, which temporarily influence the hair-growth cycle. Rainwater itself is rarely the primary reason behind increased shedding.

Myth 2: Washing Hair Frequently Weakens It

Many people deliberately skip shampooing during the rainy season, fearing it will worsen hair fall.

Ironically, this habit often creates more problems.

Humidity accelerates the accumulation of sweat, sebum, dust and pollution on the scalp. Without regular cleansing, these impurities can clog hair follicles, encourage dandruff and trigger irritation.

Gentle but consistent cleansing is therefore essential for maintaining a healthy scalp.

Myth 3: Heavy Oiling Protects Hair

For generations, oiling has been viewed as the universal solution to every hair concern.

During monsoon, however, excessive oil application may prove counterproductive.

Heavy oils can trap dirt and moisture, weigh down the hair and clog scalp pores, disturbing its natural balance. Experts recommend moderation rather than excessive oiling.

Myth 4: Frizz Means Hair Is Damaged

Frizz is often mistaken for irreversible damage.

In reality, it is primarily the hair’s natural response to moisture in the atmosphere.

Hair strands absorb humidity, causing the cuticle to swell and creating the familiar rough, fluffy appearance. While frizz can be frustrating, it is usually a temporary manageability issue rather than evidence of damaged hair.

Myth 5: One Hair Routine Suits Everyone

No two heads of hair behave identically.

Straight, curly, wavy, chemically treated and colour-treated hair all react differently to monsoon humidity.

Experts stress that seasonal hair care should always be personalised instead of following generic routines that ignore individual hair texture and scalp condition.

Myth 6: More Products Mean Better Protection

Layering multiple shampoos, serums, oils and masks may appear beneficial, but it often overwhelms both the scalp and the hair.

The better approach is targeted care—using products designed to address specific concerns such as scalp balance, hydration or frizz control without unnecessary buildup.

Referring to specialised formulations, Moolya notes that solutions such as Pro Bio Honey Moisture Shampoo are designed to deliver focused nourishment instead of encouraging product overload.

The Real Secret to Healthy Monsoon Hair

Experts believe successful monsoon hair care is not about fighting the season but adapting to it intelligently.

Simpler routines, regular scalp hygiene, personalised care and scientifically backed products often outperform elaborate beauty rituals built around myths.

As Moolya aptly sums it up, “Healthy hair during monsoon is less about effort and more about clarity in approach.”
