NEW DELHI, MAY 2
In a landmark step toward digitising highway infrastructure, National Highways Authority of India has successfully launched India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch stretch of National Highway 48 in Gujarat.
On the very first day of implementation, around 41,500 vehicles passed through the toll point seamlessly—without stopping—marking a major milestone in India’s digital highway transformation.
“The MLFF framework introduces barrier-less tolling with minimal human intervention, enabling vehicles to pass through toll locations without stopping and ensuring seamless traffic flow,” officials said.
The system integrates advanced technologies including Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag-based electronic toll collection, enabling fully automated, contactless tolling operations.
Officials said the rollout represents a “paradigm shift” in highway mobility, significantly improving efficiency, reducing congestion, cutting travel time, enhancing fuel efficiency, and lowering vehicular emissions.
“MLFF marks a paradigm shift in the travel experience for National Highway users, significantly enhancing efficiency and convenience,” NHAI stated.
Digital Enforcement & FASTag Compliance
To ensure smooth operations, users have been urged to maintain sufficient balance in FASTag accounts. In cases of insufficient balance, invalid or non-functional tags, an Electronic Notice (E-Notice) will be issued.
“Such users will be required to pay normal user fee within 72 hours of the E-Notice. In case of non-compliance after 72 hours, the user fee will be charged at twice the normal rate of the vehicle category,” the authority warned.
Users can access and pay notices via the official portal:

Grievances can also be raised within 72 hours, failing which FASTag accounts may be blacklisted and linked services on the VAHAN platform restricted.
Towards Smarter Highway Ecosystem
Officials said MLFF will improve transparency, reduce operational costs of toll plazas, and create a more efficient, technology-driven tolling ecosystem across the national highway network.
