Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, the film underwent 12 CBFC-directed modifications, including muted political references, altered visuals and deletion of select scenes before certification was granted. The certified runtime stands at 183 minutes and 11 seconds, with around 20 seconds of deletions and 10 seconds of replacements.
- CBFC grants ‘A’ certificate after 12 modifications, paving the way for the much-awaited H. Vinoth directorial starring Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay
- Political references, visuals and dialogues revised as censor process ends one of Tamil cinema’s longest certification battles in recent years
- Courtroom twists, piracy shock and record fan anticipation culminate in July 24 release window for Vijay’s final film before full-time public life
- Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj and Anirudh Ravichander headline a star-studded cinematic farewell expected to dominate the box office
Among the key changes directed by the CBFC are the muting or modification of references to “TVK”, removal of the phrase “New India”, deletion of a scene showing the Indian National Flag falling to the ground, alteration of a dialogue referring to B.R. Ambedkar, and removal or modification of certain religious references and objectionable expressions. The Board also ordered the replacement of a disturbing visual involving a child and the deletion of a scene depicting disrespect towards a district collector’s office insignia.
The film, originally slated for a Pongal 2026 release, became embroiled in an extended certification dispute after it was submitted to the CBFC in December last year. The producers subsequently approached the Madras High Court, alleging an unexplained delay in certification. The legal battle later reached the Supreme Court, before the producers agreed to have the film examined by a revising committee, ultimately leading to the present clearance.
The controversy intensified in April when a high-definition copy of the uncertified film was leaked online. During proceedings before the Madras High Court, it was revealed that the pirated version had reportedly been viewed around 1.2 crore times before access was blocked. Tamil Nadu Police later arrested several persons, including a freelance film editor, in connection with the leak.
With the censor hurdle finally crossed, industry sources expect “Jana Nayagan” to hit theatres on July 24, with an estimated release across nearly 1,000 screens in Tamil Nadu, while overseas distributors have already begun preparations for its worldwide rollout.
The film carries enormous emotional significance as it is widely regarded as Vijay’s final screen appearance before dedicating himself fully to public life after launching Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in 2024 and subsequently assuming office as Chief Minister.
Apart from Vijay, the ensemble cast includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani, while the technical team features music composer Anirudh Ravichander, cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan and editor Pradeep E. Ragav.
For millions of fans, the certification marks not merely the clearance of a film but the beginning of the final cinematic chapter of one of Indian cinema’s biggest superstars—a farewell that is expected to ignite theatres across India and overseas.
