NE HEALTH BUREAU

AHMEDABAD, SEPT 1

On a festival that celebrates the bond between a brother and sister, a grieving family chose to honour the meaning of life in the most extraordinary way — by quietly donating the organs of a 41-year-old woman and giving four critically ill patients a chance to live.

The woman, who was declared brain-dead following a severe brain haemorrhage, became an organ donor at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital after her family, despite being overwhelmed by grief, consented to the donation.

Her heart, liver and two kidneys have now become a bridge between loss and hope, with the four organs set to give four patients a new lease of life.

The emotional act of generosity came during the sacred festival of Raksha Bandhan, turning a family’s moment of unbearable loss into an occasion of renewed hope for four other families.

“Organ donation is not merely a donation of organs, but the greatest gift that brings hope and happiness to a hopeless life,” said Dr Rakesh Joshi, Medical Superintendent, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

From a brain haemorrhage to a gift of life

The 41-year-old woman had been admitted to the ICU of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital after suffering a serious brain haemorrhage.

Despite intensive treatment by the medical team, she was declared brain-dead on August 27.

Following the declaration, Dr Nimesh Desai of the Civil Hospital’s organ donation team counselled the family on the significance of organ donation and the possibility of saving other lives.

Still confronting the shock of losing their loved one, the family gave its consent.

That decision transformed a devastating personal tragedy into a potential lifeline for four strangers.

One heart, one liver, two kidneys — four new hopes

The donated heart will be transplanted into a needy patient undergoing treatment at UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre.

The donated liver and both kidneys will be transplanted into patients undergoing treatment at the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC).

Thus, a single act of generosity has opened a path to survival for four patients and their families.

Dr Joshi said that the timing of the donation on Raksha Bandhan made the gesture even more poignant, as the donation had brought “a new morning of happiness” to four families.

He emphasised that organ donation goes far beyond the physical transfer of an organ.

For a patient waiting for a transplant, he said, it can mean hope where there was despair and a smile where there was uncertainty.

Civil Hospital’s organ-donation legacy grows

The latest donation adds to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital’s growing record in organ donation and transplantation support.

According to the hospital, 252 organ donors have so far contributed a total of:

  • 466 kidneys
  • 226 livers
  • 80 hearts
  • 34 lungs
  • 21 pancreases
  • 6 hands
  • 2 small intestines

This amounts to 835 donated organs.

In addition, the hospital has received donations of 200 eyes and 48 skin tissues, taking the cumulative number of donated organs and tissues to 1,083.

Behind every number is a family that made a difficult decision at a moment of profound loss.

The latest Raksha Bandhan donation once again underlines the extraordinary potential of organ donation: one life may end, but through an act of compassion, its gift can continue in many others.
