He succeeds Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, who has taken over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
A Soldier Forged Across Battlefields
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Lt Gen Jain was commissioned into the Mahar Regiment in June 1988. Over nearly four decades, he has held a spectrum of command and staff appointments across diverse and demanding operational theatres.
From UN Missions to LoC: A Rich Operational Legacy
The General Officer has commanded:
- An Infantry Battalion in semi-developed terrain and with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan
- An Infantry Brigade in a Strike Corps
- A Counter Insurgency Force and a Pivot Corps in Northern Command
His operational credentials include participation in Operation Pawan, service as a Military Observer with the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia, and multiple tenures in high-altitude areas, along the Line of Control, and in the Northeast.
Strategic Mind Behind Capability Building
Before taking over the Command, Lt Gen Jain served as Chief of Staff at Headquarters Southern Command, where he played a pivotal role in capability development, force restructuring, and enhancing operational preparedness.
He is also a graduate of the Higher Command Course at the Army War College and the National Defence Course in Kenya. His distinguished service has been recognised with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Sena Medal (SM).
“Operational Readiness Across All Fronts”
Upon assuming command, Lt Gen Jain paid homage at the Southern Command War Memorial and received a Guard of Honour. He asserted:
“The Command will continue to focus on operational readiness across its diverse areas of responsibility, including deserts, the Rann and Creek sector, coastline, island territories and hinterland.”
He further emphasised: “We will strengthen jointness, indigenous capability development and technology absorption under the JAI framework, while maintaining the highest standards of preparedness, professionalism and combat readiness in line with evolving operational challenges.”
A Command with Strategic Depth
Southern Command oversees a vast and complex geography—from deserts and coastal belts to island territories—making leadership continuity and operational vision critical in an evolving security landscape.
