MADURAI, APR 6

In a landmark and unprecedented ruling, a trial court in Madurai has awarded double death sentences to nine police personnel convicted in the 2020 Sathankulam (Tuticorin) custodial deaths of trader P. Jayaraj and his son J. Bennix.

  • Madurai court delivers historic verdict in 2020 Sathankulam custodial deaths of father-son duo
  • Nine police personnel awarded double death sentence, court calls crime “spine-chilling and horrific”
  • Case that sparked nationwide outrage over custodial torture reaches legal closure after six years
  • Judgment reinforces zero tolerance for abuse of power and custodial violence
  • Compensation awarded to victims’ family; verdict sets a strong legal precedent

Pronouncing the punishment, the court described the crime as “spine-chilling and horrific”, observing that it falls under the “rarest of rare” category, thereby warranting capital punishment.

The court held that the brutality inflicted in custody, leading to the deaths of the father-son duo, represented a grave misuse of authority and a serious violation of human rights, making it a fit case for the highest punishment under law.

The Crime That Shocked the Nation

The incident occurred in June 2020, when the victims were taken into custody by police in Sathankulam, Thoothukudi district, allegedly for violating COVID-19 lockdown rules.

  • Both were subjected to severe custodial torture
  • They were remanded despite visible injuries
  • They died within days due to complications

The case triggered massive public outrage across India, raising serious concerns about police accountability and custodial practices.

Court’s Observations & Verdict

The court relied on strong evidence, including medical reports and witness testimonies, to convict the accused.

Key highlights:

  • Crime termed exceptionally brutal and inhuman
  • Categorised under “rarest of rare” doctrine
  • Double death penalty imposed on all nine convicts
  • Monetary compensation awarded to the victims’ family

The court also rejected arguments that the accused were acting under orders, stressing individual responsibility for unlawful actions.

Why This Verdict Matters

This judgment is a defining moment in India’s legal history:

  • Sends a powerful deterrent message against custodial violence
  • Strengthens faith in the justice delivery system
  • Highlights the need for systemic police reforms
  • Establishes a benchmark for accountability in custodial death cases

From Outrage to Justice

The case saw significant developments over the years:

  • Intervention and monitoring by the Madras High Court
  • Investigation transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)
  • Continuous legal scrutiny ensuring a fair trial

After nearly six years, the verdict brings a measure of justice in a case that became a symbol of resistance against custodial abuse.
