In a major boost to medical education and healthcare capacity, Tamil Nadu has secured 150 additional MBBS seats for three government medical colleges, further reinforcing its position as one of India’s foremost centres for medical education. The expansion, approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC), will significantly enhance opportunities for aspiring doctors while strengthening the state’s healthcare ecosystem.
Announcing the development, Tamil Nadu Minister for Health, Medical Education and Public Welfare G.K. Arunraj said the state had obtained the additional undergraduate (MBBS) seats following sustained efforts by the Health and Family Welfare Department under the guidance of the Chief Minister.

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the National Medical Commission has sanctioned 50 additional MBBS seats each for the Government Medical Colleges at Namakkal, Tiruppur and Tiruvallur. With this approval, the annual intake capacity of each institution has increased from 100 to 150 students.
The Minister said the approval was the result of the state’s continuous investment in expanding medical infrastructure, strengthening faculty, upgrading clinical facilities and ensuring the timely submission of all statutory compliance reports required by the National Medical Commission.
With the latest enhancement, Tamil Nadu now has a total intake capacity of 5,200 MBBS seats across its 36 Government Medical Colleges, further consolidating its leadership in medical education.

“This expansion reflects our sustained commitment to improving medical infrastructure, increasing faculty strength and enhancing patient-care facilities. Under the leadership of the Chief Minister, the Government of Tamil Nadu remains firmly committed to preserving the state’s position as the country’s leading hub for healthcare and medical education,” said Dr K G Arunraaj, Tamil Nadu Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare.
He further stated that the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DME&R) has been instructed to seamlessly integrate the 150 newly sanctioned MBBS seats into the 2026-27 State Counselling process.
The Minister emphasised that admissions to all government medical colleges would be conducted strictly in accordance with the final seat matrix approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC), ensuring a transparent and orderly admission process.
