In a significant step to strengthen election awareness and responsible reporting, Archana Patnaik on Tuesday released the ‘Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election Handbook 2026’, curated by the Press Information Bureau, Chennai.
Delivering a strong endorsement of the press, Patnaik underlined the media’s central role in the democratic process.

“Media plays a pivotal role in the election process—it is the multiplier that transforms information into informed participation,” she said, in a punchline that drew applause.
A ‘Complete Package’ for Journalists
Describing the handbook as a comprehensive resource, Patnaik said it would significantly enhance election coverage.
“This handbook is a complete package with all essential information required by journalists. The statistics and figures from past elections have been presented with precision,” she noted.
She also commended the team behind its design and execution, calling it a valuable ready reckoner for media professionals.
Push for 100% Polling
Reaffirming the Election Commission’s commitment to maximising voter turnout, she highlighted targeted efforts in urban regions.
“We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure 100% polling. In metropolitan cities like Chennai, special measures are being taken to improve voter participation,” Patnaik said.
She urged the media to actively partner in this mission.
“We seek the cooperation of the media to help increase voting percentage, especially in urban areas.”
Crackdown on Misinformation
With social media playing a decisive role in elections, the CEO emphasised strict monitoring and swift action against violations.
“Social media platforms are being closely monitored, and appropriate action will be taken against any violation of the Model Code of Conduct,” she asserted.
Citizens were encouraged to use the cVIGIL app to report violations, ensuring prompt redressal.
From Kudavolai to AI Era
Adding perspective, V. Palanichamy, Director General, South Zone, Press Information Bureau, Chennai said the handbook captures the evolution of elections—from the ancient Kudavolai system to the digital age.
“In an era of artificial intelligence and rapid information flow, media must verify before publishing and refrain from spreading misinformation,” he cautioned.
