CHENNAI, JULY 2
Demonstrating that its commitment extends far beyond safeguarding the nation’s seas, the Indian Navy mounted a swift and coordinated firefighting operation alongside civil authorities to contain a major blaze near Kalpakkam, preventing what could have escalated into a serious disaster. The fire erupted on Tuesday in a forested stretch at Pudupakkam, close to the Navy’s 2N Detachment, where an outdoor storage facility housing 520 rubber-coated iron desalination water pipes belonging to Chennai Metro Water Works was engulfed in flames.
- Swift action by naval personnel prevents a massive blaze from spreading across forest land and critical infrastructure near Kalpakkam
- Seamless coordination between the Indian Navy and Tamil Nadu Fire Department averts a major disaster without any casualties
- Operation underscores the Navy’s expanding role as a first responder in humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and civil emergency support
The emergency was first detected by personnel of the Navy’s 2N Detachment, who immediately alerted the civil fire services while simultaneously launching firefighting operations to contain the rapidly spreading blaze.
With strong winds feeding the highly combustible rubber material, the situation threatened to spread quickly to adjoining areas. Responding without delay, the naval unit deployed trained personnel, water bowsers and portable firefighting equipment to establish a containment zone around the fire, preventing further escalation until the arrival of the State Fire Department.
Thereafter, Indian Navy personnel worked shoulder to shoulder with firefighters in a coordinated operation that ultimately brought the blaze under complete control.
Thanks to the prompt response and effective inter-agency coordination, the fire was extinguished without any loss of life or injuries, highlighting the Navy’s readiness to respond not only to maritime emergencies but also to disasters affecting civilian communities.
The operation once again showcased the Indian Navy’s crucial role in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions, where its operational preparedness, discipline and rapid mobilisation continue to make it a dependable first responder during natural and man-made emergencies.
