CHENGALPATTU, AUG 17
Chengalpattu is poised to script a new chapter in Tamil Nadu’s global business story, with the internationally recognised World Trade Center brand set to make its entry into the district. GT Bharathi (GTB) has secured a coveted licence from the World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) to develop a World Trade Center business in Chengalpattu, paving the way for what the developer envisages as a ₹7,000-crore, IT-centric mixed-use business township.
The licence places GTB within the WTCA’s global network of more than 300 World Trade Center businesses across nearly 100 countries and territories, giving the Chengalpattu project access to a globally connected ecosystem of businesses, trade services and member exchanges.

- Over 1 lakh jobs projected as commercial, retail, data-centre, residential, education and hospitality hubs take shape
- Landowners along OMR from Thiruporur and ECR in Chengalpattu invited to join landmark development
- WTCA calls Chengalpattu an important new anchor in its growing India footprint
- GTB aims to put the region firmly on the global trade and investment map
The development is envisioned as the centrepiece of an integrated township spread across approximately 150 acres, with the potential to generate more than 1 lakh jobs at full build-out.
The announcement assumes significance as Chengalpattu rapidly emerges as a major growth corridor adjoining Chennai, with connectivity to the city’s IT corridor, industrial clusters and upcoming infrastructure. The proposed WTC is expected to add an international business dimension to the region’s expanding economic landscape.
“We are pleased to welcome WTC Chengalpattu to the global WTCA network. We trust that it will help connect the region’s growing business ecosystem with global opportunities, and look forward to all that the organization will accomplish,” said Scott Wang, Vice President, Asia Pacific, World Trade Centers Association.
The WTCA, an apolitical global organisation, operates with the mission “Connecting Businesses, Globally.” Its network seeks to connect companies and local economies with international markets while fostering trade, collaboration and cross-border business relationships even amid geopolitical and trade-policy uncertainties.
‘A defining moment for Chengalpattu’
For GT Bharathi, the licence represents more than the addition of an internationally recognised name to a real-estate development.
“To be entrusted with the World Trade Center name is a distinction we do not take lightly. It places GTB in the company of the world’s foremost commercial landmarks and calls on us to build to that standard,” said Bharat Kanti Doshi, Chairman, GT Bharathi.
“For Chengalpattu, this is a defining moment. We intend to deliver an institution that draws global commerce to Tamil Nadu, elevates the region’s standing on the world’s trade map, and creates lasting economic value for generations. It is a privilege to carry this responsibility, and we intend to live up to it,” he said.
150-acre live-work-learn ecosystem
GTB plans to develop the WTC as the anchor of a self-sustaining live-work-learn destination, with the masterplan expected to unfold in phases over roughly a decade.
The proposed township will bring together commercial and retail spaces, data centres, residential and luxury residential communities, educational institutions and hospitality facilities, creating an integrated business and lifestyle ecosystem.
“Our vision is a self-sustaining live-work-learn destination anchored by the WTC business park,” said Arun Bharathi Arunachalam, Managing Director, GT Bharathi.
“The masterplan is designed to unfold in phases over roughly a decade, bringing together commercial and retail spaces, data centres, residential and luxury residential communities, educational institutions, and hospitality,” he said.
“Beyond the built environment, our deepest ambition is impact: a development of this scale is expected to create over 1,00,000 jobs, connecting local talent to global enterprise and turning Chengalpattu into a destination where careers, industries, and communities are built together,” Arun Bharathi Arunachalam added.
Chengalpattu as the next global business node
The proposed WTC will also seek to work with existing WTCA members in the region, including WTC Chennai, to promote international trade and regional economic development. WTC Chennai itself is part of the WTCA network and is currently under development. (World Trade Centers Association)
“GTB’s entry into the WTCA network strengthens our presence in one of India’s fastest-growing trade corridors,” said Badal Saboo, Business Lead – India & Asia Pacific, World Trade Centers Association.
“Chengalpattu adds another anchor point to our India footprint, and we look forward to supporting GTB as it builds a destination that connects the region’s enterprises to the WTCA network’s global reach,” he added.
The project’s employment and investment ambitions come against the backdrop of growing industrial and technology activity in the Chennai-Chengalpattu belt. Recent investments, including Hitachi Energy’s ₹1,000-crore Tamil Nadu expansion covering Chennai and Chengalpattu, underline the corridor’s growing importance for advanced technology and manufacturing.
GTB opens door for landowners
As it advances the masterplan, GTB is actively discussing consolidation of a land parcel commensurate with the scale of the proposed development.
The company has invited landowners holding parcels of comparable size along the OMR corridor from Thiruporur onwards and along the ECR within Chengalpattu district to engage with GTB and explore participation in the proposed landmark development.
With a globally recognised trade brand, a proposed ₹7,000-crore investment footprint and an employment potential exceeding one lakh, WTC Chengalpattu could become a new bridge between Tamil Nadu’s fast-expanding regional economy and the global marketplace.
