One of the most iconic partnerships in the history of franchise cricket came to an emotional end on Monday as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Stephen Fleming mutually agreed to part ways, concluding an extraordinary 18-year association that redefined excellence in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The decision followed a series of open and constructive discussions between Fleming and the CSK management, with both sides choosing to bring the historic chapter to a close with mutual respect, admiration and gratitude.

Fleming’s journey with CSK began as a player during the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before he assumed charge as head coach in 2009. Over the next 17 seasons as coach, he built one of the most admired and consistent cricketing structures in franchise sport, turning CSK into the gold standard of the IPL.
Under his stewardship, Chennai Super Kings captured five IPL championships, won two Champions League Twenty20 titles, reached a record 12 IPL playoffs, and featured in 10 IPL finals—a record that underscores the franchise’s sustained dominance over nearly two decades.
Paying tribute to Fleming’s immense contribution, CSK Owner Rupa Gurunath described him as the defining force behind the franchise’s success.
“Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence.”
She added:
“On behalf of everyone at the Super Kings franchise, we extend our deepest gratitude for his unwavering commitment, passion, and leadership. While our journey together on the field comes to a close, he will always remain an integral part of the team’s legacy.”
CSK Managing Director KS Viswanathan said Fleming’s influence extended far beyond trophies and results.
“From the earliest days of this journey, Fleming helped define not just how we played, but what we wanted to be as a franchise. He built a culture rooted in consistency, humility, and putting the team first. His ability to understand people and bring out the best from individuals across the team has been one of his greatest strengths.”
He added: “His influence extends far beyond the boundary, and we are proud to have shared this remarkable journey together.”
Reflecting on an association that spanned nearly two decades, Fleming expressed gratitude for what he called the defining chapter of his coaching career.
“Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved.”
Looking back on the highs and challenges shared with the franchise, the former New Zealand captain said:
“Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will be cheering the team on for years to come.”
