Academic and medical institutions in Puducherry came together to honour Bharat Ratna B R Ambedkar on his 135th birth anniversary, celebrating his enduring legacy of equality, social justice, and nation-building.

At Pondicherry University, the commemorative event was held at the B.R. Ambedkar Administrative Building, where Vice-Chancellor P Prakash Babu addressed faculty, staff, and students, highlighting Ambedkar’s transformative contributions—from architecting the Constitution and serving as Independent India’s first Law Minister to championing the rights of the oppressed and marginalized.

Urging deeper academic engagement with Ambedkar’s ideas, he said, “Dr. B.R. Ambedkar did not just dream of equality – he designed a nation where equality could be lived,” and called upon scholars to carry forward that vision through research and action. He also stressed the need for prioritising social inclusion, access to education, and skill development, while underlining Ambedkar’s pioneering role in advocating women’s rights and labour reforms, as well as conceptualising the idea behind the Reserve Bank of India.
The programme witnessed participation from senior academic leaders, including Prof. Bhushan D. Sudhakar, Prof. K. Tharanikkarasu, Prof. P. Natarajan, Registrar Prof. K. Gunasekaran, Prof. M. Krishna Murthy, and several faculty members, officers, staff, and students. The event was coordinated by Dr. Ajay Babu.
Meanwhile, at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, the birth anniversary was observed with solemn tributes, as faculty, students, and staff gathered to pay homage to the visionary leader.
Director Vir Singh Negi led the observance alongside senior officials including Dean Academics Dr. Vikram Kate and Medical Superintendent Dr. Vinod Kumar Saka.
On the occasion, Dr. Negi released the institute’s official newsletter “Vanakkam JIPMER”, showcasing its academic, clinical, and research milestones. Reflecting on Ambedkar’s relevance in contemporary society, he emphasised the guiding principles of equality and dignity.
He noted that Ambedkar’s ideals continue to shape public institutions, particularly in healthcare, and highlighted the importance of ensuring equitable access to quality medical services for the most vulnerable sections. He reiterated JIPMER’s commitment to excellence in medical education and training, while calling upon the community to uphold constitutional values, ethics, and compassion in their professional duties.
The programme concluded with a collective reaffirmation by the JIPMER fraternity to uphold the principles of equality, service, and excellence—drawing inspiration from Ambedkar’s life and vision.
