AHMEDABAD, APRIL 20
A knock for the ages from Tilak Varma lit up the Narendra Modi Stadium as Mumbai Indians stormed back to form, crushing Gujarat Titans by a massive 99 runs in a one-sided Indian Premier League clash on Monday.
Coming in under pressure and struggling at 19 off 22 balls, Tilak scripted a sensational turnaround after a mid-innings intervention from skipper Hardik Pandya. What followed was pure carnage—an unbeaten 101 off just 45 balls, including eight fours and seven sixes, marking the fastest century in Mumbai Indians’ IPL history.

“The message was simple—get a move on. Tilak responded like a champion,” sources close to the MI camp indicated, reflecting the impact of Pandya’s animated on-field chat during the strategic timeout.
From crawl to cyclone
At one stage, MI looked headed for another underwhelming total, rattled early by Kagiso Rabada’s fiery spell. The South African quick, often bracketed with elite names like Pat Cummins, Jasprit Bumrah and Josh Hazlewood, struck thrice to leave MI reeling.
But the game flipped dramatically after the second strategic timeout. Tilak went berserk, smashing 82 runs off his next 23 balls as MI plundered 96 runs in the final six overs.
“I backed my instincts and just played my natural game after settling in,” Tilak said after his landmark innings.
Bowling brilliance seals the deal
Defending 199/5, MI’s bowlers ensured there was no comeback. Jasprit Bumrah made an immediate impact, dismissing Sai Sudharsan off the very first ball to break his wicketless streak.
Left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar emerged as the surprise package, ripping through the middle order with figures of 4/24, while Mitchell Santner tightened the screws with 2/16.
GT crumbled to 100 all out in just 15.5 overs, exposing glaring weaknesses in their middle order.
“We lost momentum early and never recovered. Credit to MI—they outplayed us in all departments,” a disappointed GT camp admitted.
Middle-order misfire haunts Titans
The defeat also raised serious questions over GT’s batting depth, particularly the continued struggles of Rahul Tewatia and M Shahrukh Khan.
The duo managed just 25 runs off 24 balls, leaving head coach Ashish Nehra with tough calls ahead.
“We need to reassess combinations. Performances like this aren’t acceptable at this level,” a team insider hinted.
A season reignited
The emphatic win snapped MI’s four-match losing streak, pushing them to seventh in the standings while significantly improving their net run rate.
More importantly, it may just mark the turning point in their campaign.
“This is the kind of win that can change a season,” experts noted, underlining the psychological boost of a dominant all-round performance.
