With Chennai as its home base and Tamil Nadu as one of its most strategically important operating markets, Star Health has built a formidable healthcare access and claims ecosystem across the state. In FY26, the company reported gross written premium of ₹2,951 crore in Tamil Nadu, covered more than 3.8 million lives, and derived over 94% of its state portfolio from retail health insurance. Its on-ground strength in Tamil Nadu is anchored by 119 branches, more than 1.28 lakh advisors and over 1,900 network hospitals, giving it one of the most extensive retail health distribution and service footprints in the state.
Star Health also continues to hold a leadership position nationally. In FY26, the company commanded a 31.3% market share in retail health insurance across the general insurance industry in India, reinforcing its scale at the national level even as Tamil Nadu continues to stand out as one of its strongest and most trusted markets.
As it looks to widen affordability and deepen access to health protection, the insurer is also strengthening its product portfolio through Value Plus, a proposition designed to offer customers a more manageable premium structure through a curated hospital network. Star Health expects Value Plus to contribute at least 10% of its business this financial year, supporting its strategy to improve health insurance penetration amid rising medical costs.
Anand Roy, MD & CEO, Star Health and Allied Insurance, said,
“Tamil Nadu is where Star Health’s journey began, and the 41% retail health market share we held in the state in FY25 reflects the depth of customer trust built over the years. Nationally, our 31.3% retail health market share in FY26 gives us both scale and responsibility. The next phase is about using that scale to make the customer journey simpler, from local advice and hospital access to faster claims support, preventive health and care at home. With more than 8,300 claims processed every day and AI now supporting 20% of routine cashless claims, our focus is to make health insurance more responsive and useful for families when they need it most.”
At the national level, Star Health settled more than ₹11,900 crore worth of claims covering 30.6 lakh claims in FY26. The company is currently processing over 8,300 claims every day, with 92% of cashless claims being processed in less than three hours. To strengthen speed, transparency and operational efficiency, Star Health has invested nearly ₹200 crore in technology transformation initiatives, while almost 90% of proposals are now processed digitally.
A key pillar of this transformation is the insurer’s push into AI-driven claims processing. Star Health has already enabled AI-led straight-through processing for routine cashless claims, with 20% of cashless claims currently handled through AI, and has set a target of scaling this up to 50% over the next two years.
The company is also deepening its advisor-led distribution strategy to take health insurance access beyond metros and into smaller markets. In FY27, Star Health plans to onboard at least one lakh agents, with nearly 80% expected to come from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, a move aimed at expanding local advice, improving customer education and strengthening last-mile support for families outside major urban centres.
Balaji Babu, Business Head – Tamil Nadu, Star Health Insurance, said,
“Tamil Nadu has shaped Star Health’s journey from the beginning, and our strength in the state has been built through deep local relationships. Our customers, agents, partners and employees have all played an important role in this journey. The agent meet is an opportunity to recognise the agency force that has helped take health insurance conversations into homes, neighbourhoods and smaller markets across the state. Their everyday engagement with customers continues to strengthen trust, improve awareness and support families in making more informed health insurance decisions.”
Beyond claims, Star Health is steadily positioning itself as a broader health partner by expanding preventive care, digital consultation and home-based support. In FY26, the company recorded a 42% rise in preventive health check-ups to 5.48 lakh, while telemedicine consultations surged 88% to 1.17 lakh. Home Healthcare utilisation reached 92,153 across 300 cities, helping customers receive care at home for clinically appropriate conditions and reducing unwarranted hospitalisation.
The insurer is also extending its healthcare footprint to underserved communities through its Arogya Seva Kendra initiative, implemented in partnership with Piramal Swasthya. Operating through 32 clinics across nine states, the programme aims to reach over one million lives. So far, these clinics have recorded 78,651 visits, conducted 86,595 medical tests, and delivered 8,682 health education sessions. In Tamil Nadu, Arogya Seva Kendras are currently operational in Chennai, Nagercoil, Thoothukudi, Tiruppur and Karur.
As Star Health marks 20 years in Tamil Nadu with a mega agent meet in Chennai, the numbers make one point clear: the state is not merely the company’s birthplace, but its most powerful proof-point — a market where claims scale, advisor strength, hospital access, technology adoption and customer trust have combined to cement its leadership in retail health insurance.
