In a historic leap for global conservation education, Vantara has announced the launch of Vantara University in Jamnagar—hailed as the world’s first integrated global university dedicated to wildlife conservation and veterinary sciences.
Founded by Anant Ambani, the institution is envisioned as a modern-day Gurukul—where compassion meets cutting-edge science—aimed at shaping a new generation of professionals in wildlife care, veterinary medicine and ecosystem preservation.
Rooted in India’s rich knowledge traditions and driven by real-world conservation practices, the university seeks to redefine how the world approaches animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
Sharing his deeply personal inspiration, Anant Ambani said: “The future of conservation will depend on how we prepare minds and institutions to serve life with compassion, knowledge, and skill. Vantara University is shaped by a deeply personal journey of witnessing animals in distress and recognising the need for greater capability in their care. Inspired by the ethos of the ancient Nalanda University, and the spirit of Ā no bhadrāḥ kratavo yantu viśvataḥ, which means let noble thoughts come to us from all directions, the university seeks to nurture a new generation committed to protecting every life.”

The foundation ceremony itself stood as a powerful symbol of India’s ecological and intellectual heritage. Conducted in accordance with Hindu traditions, it featured the ceremonial placement of soil, water and stones sourced from biodiversity-rich landscapes across the country—from forests and wetlands to arid zones and Himalayan terrains—reflecting the vision of building the university on the foundation of India’s natural wealth.
Adding a historic touch, Bijoliya sandstone from the Vindhyan formation, linked to the legacy of ancient Nalanda, was incorporated into the foundation design—bridging India’s past wisdom with its future aspirations.
Designed as a multidisciplinary ecosystem, Vantara University will offer a wide spectrum of programmes—undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowships and specialised courses—in areas such as wildlife medicine and surgery, genetics, epidemiology, behavioural sciences, conservation policy, One Health, and naturalistic habitat design.

With advanced academic and clinical infrastructure, global collaborations and a residential campus, the university aims to drive action-oriented research while integrating in situ and ex situ conservation practices—connecting natural habitats with scientific care.
The initiative also emphasises inclusivity, with scholarships such as ‘Every Life Matters’ and the introduction of ‘Vantara University Founding Fellows’, ensuring opportunities for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
More than an academic institution, Vantara University represents a broader national mission—to transform conservation through education, innovation and empathy.
