The sea lanes around Kerala are acquiring a new economic address. Vizhinjam International Seaport on Tuesday moved beyond its identity as a transshipment hub and opened its gates to full-fledged land-based export-import (EXIM) cargo operations, marking a decisive shift towards becoming a complete international cargo gateway and potentially redrawing the maritime trade map of southern India.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, making his first full-fledged official visit to Vizhinjam after assuming office following the April Assembly elections, reached the port early on Tuesday and reviewed its operational preparedness ahead of the launch of direct EXIM cargo movement.

The transition means containers will now be brought into and taken out of Vizhinjam through the land-side gateway, complementing its existing ship-to-ship transshipment operations. The move is expected to reduce cargo-handling time and logistics costs, strengthen supply-chain efficiency and give exporters and importers in Kerala and neighbouring regions a more direct international maritime gateway.

Accompanied by Industries, Information Technology and Commerce Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty, Satheesan was given a detailed briefing on the port’s operations and preparations for the next phase. He also inspected the Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) office, underscoring the technology-driven nature of the facility.

The EXIM launch is being positioned by the Kerala Government as a key component of its Mission Samudra strategy to transform the State into a major maritime and logistics hub by integrating ports, logistics, manufacturing, inland waterways and multimodal connectivity. The State is also seeking to leverage Vizhinjam to attract investments in logistics, warehousing, manufacturing and allied industries.

From transshipment stop to trade gateway

The significance of the development lies in what happens beyond the quay. Until now, Vizhinjam’s principal role has been transshipment—moving containers between mother vessels and feeder vessels. With land-based EXIM operations, the port can increasingly serve cargo originating in or destined for the hinterland, creating a broader logistics ecosystem around the terminal.

Vizhinjam has already established a formidable operational record. The port handled 2 million TEUs within 18 months of commencing commercial operations, while receiving some of the world’s largest container vessels. It is India’s first deep-water container transshipment port and South Asia’s first fully automated container port.

Its strategic advantage is geography. Vizhinjam is located close to the international east-west shipping route and has natural deep draft, enabling it to accommodate ultra-large container vessels. Adani Ports’ own data describes the port as being about 10 nautical miles from the east-west shipping axis, linking major trade corridors between Europe, the Persian Gulf and the Far East.

Adani’s global-trade ambition

The Adani Group, which developed and operates Vizhinjam through Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) in partnership with the Kerala Government, has long viewed the project as more than a regional port.

Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, welcoming the arrival of Vizhinjam’s first mother ship in July 2024, described it as a historic milestone that marked India’s entry into global transshipment and “usher[ed] in a new era in India’s maritime logistics”, with Vizhinjam positioned as a key player on global trade routes.

Adani subsequently cited Vizhinjam while stressing that the Group works across political jurisdictions. “We are working in almost over 25 states,” he said in December 2024, pointing to Vizhinjam as an example of an Adani infrastructure project in a non-BJP-ruled state and saying the Group was ready to work with any government without politics.

The port’s growth trajectory has also received a major boost from MSC Group’s Terminal Investment Limited (TiL). In June 2026, APSEZ and MSC announced a definitive agreement under which TiL will invest for a 49% interest in Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Ltd, with the overall deal value pegged at $2.85 billion. Vizhinjam’s present capacity of 1.6 million TEUs is planned to expand 3.5 times to 5.7 million TEUs.

Sonowal sees Colombo-Singapore challenge

Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who was scheduled to attend the EXIM launch but is not arriving for the event, has previously underlined Vizhinjam’s strategic potential.

When the first mother ship MV San Fernando arrived in 2024, Sonowal said Vizhinjam’s locational advantage and deep-draft capabilities could give it a competitive edge over established transshipment centres. He said the port could offer “stiff competition” to Colombo and Singapore and expressed hope for a positive shift of international transshipment cargo to Vizhinjam.

In January 2026, while inaugurating capacity augmentation works, Sonowal called Vizhinjam’s success a result of the Prime Minister’s vision for India’s maritime sector and said stronger port infrastructure would help Kerala play a vital role in India’s maritime future.

The Minister has also argued that the emergence of Vizhinjam as a major transshipment hub could help India save foreign exchange by reducing dependence on overseas hubs such as Colombo, Singapore and Dubai.

A bigger economic tide for Kerala

For Kerala, therefore, Tuesday’s EXIM opening is not merely another operational milestone. It represents the beginning of the port’s attempt to capture value from the entire cargo chain—from ships and containers to trucking, warehousing, logistics, manufacturing and exports.

The State Government expects the move to lower transportation costs, improve supply-chain efficiency, enhance export competitiveness, attract fresh investments and generate employment. The port will continue as an open-access common-user facility for shipping lines, ensuring that its expanded role is not confined to a single carrier or cargo network.

The timing is also significant for APSEZ, which is expanding Vizhinjam’s capacity and has targeted a substantial scale-up in the coming years. The company’s FY2025 strategy identified Vizhinjam capacity expansion as a priority, while its latest partnership with MSC strengthens volume visibility and accelerates the port’s ramp-up.

With the land-side gates now open, Vizhinjam’s challenge is no longer merely to attract the world’s biggest ships but to ensure that the cargo they carry flows efficiently into and out of India’s economic hinterland.

That could ultimately determine whether Vizhinjam becomes simply another successful Indian port—or the maritime gateway that changes Kerala’s place in global trade.
