CHENNAI, MAR 29
In a dramatic political plunge, actor-turned-politician Vijay has chosen a dual-constituency strategy, announcing he will contest from Perambur in North Chennai and Tiruchirappalli East, signalling a high-stakes debut aimed at securing a foothold in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Declaring his candidature before party cadres, the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) founder said, “It will be C. Joseph Vijay,” confirming his entry into electoral politics from both seats — a move widely seen as a tactical hedge to ensure victory in at least one constituency.
Calculated double bet
The decision to contest from two constituencies underscores TVK’s strategy to balance urban working-class consolidation in Perambur with minority and semi-urban outreach in Trichy East.
Perambur, with over 2.20 lakh voters, remains a politically significant segment dominated by working-class pockets such as Kodungaiyur and Thiruvottiyur. Though historically contested between the DMK and AIADMK, it has evolved into a DMK bastion in recent years, currently represented by R.D. Sekar.
The contest here is set to intensify with the NDA fielding a candidate from the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), led by Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, making it a triangular battle.
Trichy East: Sentiment & strategy
In contrast, Trichy East — a constituency with over 2.17 lakh voters — offers a different electoral arithmetic. With a sizeable Christian and Vellalar voter base and nearly a quarter urban electorate, it has emerged as a bellwether seat, with winning parties forming the government in successive elections since delimitation.
Currently held by S. Inigo Irudayaraj of the DMK, who defeated AIADMK’s Vellamandi Natarajan in 2021, the seat presents both opportunity and challenge for Vijay. Political observers note that while Vijay is eyeing the minority vote, the same base remains a stronghold of the incumbent.
TVK’s statewide push
Alongside his own candidature, Vijay unveiled an extensive list of TVK nominees, signalling an aggressive statewide push. Key leaders include:
- N. Anand (Bussy Anand) in T. Nagar
- Aadhav Arjuna in Villivakkam
- J.C.D. Prabhakar in Thousand Lights
- P. Venkataraman in Mylapore
- V.S. Babu against Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in Kolathur
Other senior leaders such as R. Arunraaj, CTR Nirmal Kumar, and K.A. Sengottaiyan have also been fielded, reflecting a mix of political experience and new entrants.
Strategy beyond symbolism
Party insiders indicate that Perambur offers visibility in the capital, while Trichy East opens pathways into the delta and southern districts, expanding TVK’s geographic footprint.
Vijay’s entry into Trichy, considered the heartland of Tamil Nadu politics, is also seen as an attempt to tap into broader socio-political currents beyond urban strongholds.
Tough road ahead
Despite the strategic spread, the road ahead is far from easy. Both constituencies are deeply entrenched in DMK influence, with strong organisational backing and established voter bases.
In Perambur, the DMK’s previous victory margin of over 54,000 votes highlights the scale of challenge, while in Trichy East, the constituency’s history of tight contests and shifting loyalties adds unpredictability.
Debut with high stakes
The April 23 Assembly elections will mark Vijay’s first direct electoral test, transforming his political narrative from mass appeal to measurable mandate.
For TVK, the twin-contest gamble is more than a safety net — it is a statement of intent to emerge as a serious political force in Tamil Nadu.
As the campaign gathers momentum, one question dominates the political landscape: can star power translate into ballot power across two battlefronts?
