CHENNAI, APR 24

In a defining moment for electoral politics, Tamil Nadu witnessed a record-breaking voter turnout of over 85% in the 2026 Assembly elections, the highest since Independence, according to the Election Commission of India. The unprecedented surge has triggered sharp political reactions, with Vijay, chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), hailing it as a victory for the common citizen.

  • Historic 85%+ turnout marks highest-ever voter participation since Independence, says Election Commission of India
  • TVK chief credits ordinary voters, youth and women for shattering political “illusions”
  • Karur tops with 92.62%, Kanniyakumari records lowest at 75.61%

Expressing gratitude to voters, Vijay said, “Greetings to everyone who resides in my heart. The illusions created by those who confined politics within the limits of powerful or highly experienced individuals have now been shattered by ordinary people.”

Calling the turnout a historic milestone, he added, “An 85 per cent voter turnout is something Tamil Nadu has never witnessed before. Only yesterday (Thursday) did we truly experience why elections are called a ‘festival of democracy.’ April 23, 2026, will remain a defining day.”

Echoing similar sentiments in his detailed social media post, Vijay asserted, “Politics was once thought to be only for the exceptionally skilled, the highly experienced, and those who hold positions. The magical calculations of those who confined and controlled politics within a specific boundary have been shattered by the common masses.”

Highlighting the scale of participation, he noted, “However, the assembly election voter turnout on April 23, has been recorded as a peak historical event in the electoral political history of Tamil Nadu.”

The turnout saw enthusiastic participation from youth, women and first-time voters, with even those traditionally disengaged from politics stepping out to vote. Vijay described scenes of families arriving at polling booths together as akin to festive gatherings, stating it was “impossible not to be amazed by the sight of families, with their children, coming to vote… similar to the crowds seen in temples.”

Extending gratitude to voters from across geographies, he said, “I offer my humble and grateful salutations to the people of Tamil Nadu… my grandmother, mother, elder sister, younger sisters, my grandfather, father, elder brother, younger brothers, and all my family relatives.”

He added a special note, saying, “Especially, to my little friends who have guided our family, this is a special greeting and thanks from your Uncle Vijay.”

Thanking first-time voters and those who travelled from other states and abroad, Vijay emphasised that the democratic spirit displayed deserves the highest respect. He also lauded his party cadre, stating that the voters’ response was the strongest rebuttal to critics who underestimated their political understanding.

Looking ahead, Vijay struck an optimistic note amid the triangular contest involving the ruling DMK alliance and the AIADMK-led NDA, saying, “Let us remain hopeful. Good things will happen. Victory is certain.”

However, the ruling DMK dismissed claims linking the surge to Vijay’s political entry, attributing the high turnout instead to systematic electoral roll revision (SIR) and sustained voter awareness efforts.

District-wise, Karur recorded the highest turnout at 92.62%, while Kanniyakumari registered the lowest at 75.61%, reflecting strong participation across regions.

As counting day approaches, the record turnout has not only intensified political narratives but also underscored a larger shift—where voter enthusiasm, especially among youth and women, is redefining the contours of democracy in Tamil Nadu.
